WASTELAND exhibition, 2020

Whales, like many marine animals, face increasing threats from ocean pollution, particularly plastic debris. Consuming plastic, whether bags, bottles, or discarded fishing gear, can cause severe harm, including internal injuries, malnutrition, and even death.

According to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), humans have created over 8.3 billion metric tonnes of plastic over the past six decades, with an estimated 4.7 to 12.7 million tonnes leaking into the ocean annually—more than the combined weight of every blue whale on Earth.

I would like to acknowledge the sacred and unceded land on which I am grateful to create and draw inspiration; a place that has been a site of human activity for over 15,000 years. This land is the traditional territory of the Wolastoqiyik Nation.
